Speed Sheath for a Buck 112 (One handed opening before one handed opening was cool)

Hey all,

Been lurking this forum for a few weeks trying to work up the stones to try my hand at some custom Kydex scabbards, but also wanted to share one of my previous works in leather. I dug through several dozens of pages in this forum (148 pages total as I write this, WOW!) but didn't see anything similar to this.

Many years ago (like 20 or so), I worked in a warehouse and my constant companion was a Buck 112 Lock Back knife.

There were many times when I needed to cut something, be it twine, rope, shrink wrap, etc... but of course I almost always was holding the item that needed cutting, and my trusty blade was not the easiest to open one handed.

I saw a similar sheath at a gun show and thought "I can make something like that!", so off I went to my work bench.

After several failed attempts and wasted leather, I finally got a workable design that held the knife securely and allowed one handed opening during the draw.

The pivot point the blade rides on is actually a 1/4" thick nylon bushing I found at a hardware store so as not to ruin the edge.

The bias of the blade towards close plus the fitted leather around the bolster and the slight vertical angle of the mounting keeps the blade in place during even the most physical activities I was subjected to, yet allows easy one handed opening and re-sheathing of the blade.

I'm tempted to try one out of Kydex once I get the materials and tools...

Anyone else ever make something like this?

Those things are a hoot! I used to see them at every gun show, like clockwork. :) Now its a rare sight, I blame the newest tacticool knives. :p

I've made some, tried carrying them also. I found them to be too bulky.....and Leatherman is right...with so many assisted opening options to choose from these days....those are quite the dinosaurs anymore IMO.

Yeah, it's more of a throw back to the days where the only "assisted opening" blades available were switch-blades.

I still have it and wear it every once in a while, but my EDC these days is a Kershaw Brawler...
