Speed/Spec and Cyc question

Hello,
I've done a lot of reading about the speed and spec bumps and with money not being an issue (in this rare instance) I go back-and-forth between the Spec Bump (G-10) and the Speed Bump (with black anodized handles - I don't like the other type with the rubber). I know about the steel differences and am factoring that into the difficult decision, but for an EDC with some hikes...I'm looking for what anybody who responds would consider the ONE major strength and ONE weakness for the speed and the spec. I am looking for some informed help in making the decision.

The other question is I'm getting a knife as a gift for somebody and just today I found out he has arthritis in both thumbs (He just found out last week.) Given that, I was looking at the Mini-cyclone for him. With the opening mechanism on that one, I think he should be able to manage it with a minimum of trouble...but wonder if you agree.

Thanks so much for any help.

Hey Gargs, let me address your second question first. The Mini Cyclone has a liner lock. This is usually released by the user's thumb. It's a natural movement. With arthritic thumbs, I'd consider a stud lock, such as is found on the Speed Bump, Spec Bump, Offset, Mini Mojo/Mojito. It will be much easier for him to close.

First question. I don't own a Spec Bump. I do have the Speed Bump you are describing (1595ALBLK) and I've found it to be an excellent all around knife. I am fond of the recurves, AO and stud locks, all of which are found on this knife. I've never had any issues with the aluminum scales being slippery when wet or difficult with gloves. The 13C26 is good steel; it takes a good edge and holds it for a decent amount of time. It is also fairly easy to sharpen.

So to answer your first question, I don't have a single one thing that I can say negative about this knife. I haven't found one yet. There isn't a single good thing I can say...there's too much good to narrow it down to one thing. :D

Thanks, that was a big help! I like recurve blades too and have been carrying a Seagal model for a while. My only problem with the knife is how much shows when it's clipped to the pocket, so I often carry it in one of those nylon sheaths. I like the weight of it too. Anyway, I was leaning to the Speed bump and went ahead and ordered it when I saw your post (I was getting darn close to over-think).

It's so obvious I forgot about the use of the thumb with liner locks. Stud lock should do the trick and thanks for listing the models that have it.

Cheers,
Gargs
