in say an index finger opening speedsafe like the chive what separates it from an auto? (i havent had any experience with autos so i wouldnt know) thanks!

You are initiating the opening of the knife by moving part of the blade itself, not a button or switch.

There's no mechanism in the handle that facilitates the release of the blade. That's why they call it assisted opening - you initiate opening as in any other manual folding knife and the mechanism assists you.
