A friend of mine, You know the one that always asks you to sharpen knives. Showed me a "Speedysharp" http://www.speedysharp.net/ he got from someone he works with. I had never seen one so I had him get me one. I don't know when they started making them but I was surprised I had never hear of it before. when I did a search I found only one thread from January 05. I think this little tool is neat it will really take the metal off. Don't get me wrong It isn't going near most of my knives And if you have a convex grind forget about it. think Ax, machete or shovel. It works great on a magnesium fire starter better then any thing else I have tried. However it doesn't throw a spark well. I am going to try and make it a lot more useful survival tool. I have a small thin diamond stone I am going to bond on the handle. grind the back of the handle so I can use the tool as a pry bar ( A very small one but when you need a pry bar a small one is better then nothing) and try to find a way it can throw more sparks. Maybe silver solder a small peace of carbon steel on it. Any way that's the way I see it. What do you think. Anybody ever tried the Speeysharp?

OK, I will. I'm going to move this to the Toolshed, also, where we have more people discussing sharpeners, but I will leave a permanent link here.

Interesting.

I use an Accusharp sometimes on the kitchen knives (similar idea, I think)...and, I hate to admit that it works quite well. Cost is about $10.

I follow up with the ceramic crocs on a $3 Smith's 2 in 1 sharpener. The result is just about the same as on the brown rods on my Sharpmaker (somewhat "toothy" utility edge)...and I can do it in about 30 seconds.
