Found out the man lives about an hour from me, so I had been emailing back and forth with him about taking a ride out and seeing his shop and talking about making a knife for me.
Spent about 3 hours talking about knives, music, celebrities that own his knives (Steven Tyler says on the Aerosmith website his favorite possession is one of his Steve Hill knives). Got to hear some stories about some cool people including a long friendship he had with Stevie Ray Vaughan.
We talked bowie knives. And then we talked more bowie knives. And wee talked about Jim Bowie. And he showed me his collection of Bowie knives. The he put in the Iron Mistress into the DVD player and queued up a few parts. This man knows bowies and knows the history of them. Very, very interesting stuff.
We then sat on his front porch and went through photo albums of his past work to get ideas and discuss the knife I want. This took probably an hour. In October I should have my hands on a nice one of a kind custom folder that will be trully mine, but also retain what makes a Steve Hill knife a Steve Hill knife.
Just a very nice laid back day with a real cool cat. If you get the chance to ever spend time with a guy like him I highly suggest it. It is nice to see that after 30 something years a guy can still love what he does as much as Steve does.
