sperm whale tooth

PICS PICS PICS! I am sure the whale would like it back... I would think that sperm whale teeth are a little tough to find hence the cost.
 
I personally stay away from sperm whale teeth. Even if they have the proper paperwork it is a real pain to track. If they do not you could end up chipping rocks. If you take it to Ca and try to sell it at a show it could be confiscated. Actually it could be anywhere but Ca is really bad.

I love sperm whales teeth. Checkout my site, I have some pic's of the ones I have made. I live in New Bedford, Ma. It is know as the old whaling capital of the world. We still have the largest commercial fishing fleet on the east coast.:thumbup::thumbup:
 
There are some very large teeth available. $200 would be a steal. There are lots of simulated teeth that look very real. $20 is about right for them. Make sure you know which is which. Just because the seller says it is real doesn't make it so. Many folks bought a tooth/tusk and always thought it was real.

I bought a tooth online several years back that was fake. I contacted the seller and explained that I appraise ivory and antiques, and knew it wasn't real. I tried to return it and the seller cussed me up one side and down the other for calling him a liar. (Which I never did. I just told him he was wrong.) He said he had been selling antiques for 20 years and he had bought it from a person who guaranteed it as real. Since he refused to accept the return. I sawed it in half, melted the tip with a torch and sent half to him, along with negative feedback. I never heard from him again.

While the provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 are seldom enforced, you really don't want to be the one where enforcement starts. Penalties for selling undocumented teeth range to a $10K fine and an all expense paid trip to Club Fed. All it takes is one Federal agent looking to make a name for himself.

When Calif created their own endangered species act and included whales I made the first conviction under the new law. It's on the books, folks, so be very careful.

BTW, being retired now I no longer care. But again, be very careful.

My friend, when he was in Cali, saw a dead sperm whale. Then he pulled a tooth out of it.

100% truth. No freakin jokes...crazyyy!
 
Yeah be REAL carful with whale ANYTHING. We get people coming through the border from Canada whith whale balene and teeth from time to time. Not a good scene. At the very minimum it's being confiscated, and if someone even THINKS you have it, knowing it's illegal, U.S. Fish and Wildlife will basically destroy you...

By the way, who let lawyers onto this forum?? (Sorry Gene, I'm joking of course ;) )
 
there is an antiques dealer on craig list going out of busnes and selling everything. but its not listed any more.

Good advice, and coming from a fella that has always been on the straight and narrow, for a fact.
Knowing Kalifornia, they were lined up to be the first Gestapo to nail someone.
 
To set the record straight and restore my good name, I was never a lawyer. I'm a retired game warden. I also made a number of folks angry at me over the marine mammal act. Went all the way to the Ca AG's ofc with the problem. Since all sales of whale products were prohibited, with no exceptions at the time, I pointed out that Preparation H used whale oil. I was the butt of a number of jokes over that one. Plus having thousands of hemorrhoid (sp?) sufferers angry at me. Not pretty...

One would think whoever is in charge of dead whales would snag the teeth and whatever else is useful and sell them , then use the proceeds for the protection and so forth of these great fish.

There is also a group that needs further financing for their project of trying to lower the cholesterol of whales , as this groups motto is , "Whales may be the largest creatures on earth , but they do not have to be".

Gene, I'd like to apologize for calling you the the L word. My degree is in environmental law enforcement, so I'm right there with ya :)

And for the record, I don't hate all lawyers. Just most of them ;) :jerkit:
 
The problem with allowing any sale of endangered materials is that once you allow any of it sold, the floodgates are opened for others to take advantage of it and start poaching in order to profit. I would love it if we as a people were responsible enough to police ourselves but the fact of the matter is that there are just too many of us that would seel our souls for a buck.
I have been trying to be vigilant lately but recycling when I can and so on but it has to come from all of us.

It is a tough one, I love the look of ivory and whale tooth but it is not responsible to make knife handles with materials that can cause harm to endangered or semi endangered species. I do not know how the sale of these items are policed but I am sure it is quite difficult to police it effectively. With this in mind, maybe we should not use any materials that fall in this category? I am not judging anyone who uses these materials by any means, I just wish we could come up with a way that keeps these creatures safe from poaching and illegal harvesting etc.

... it never ceases to amaze how many dirty looks and sometimes outright objections I get when showing a piece of mammoth ivory on a knife. :rolleyes:

It's wired how when some folks hear "ivory," they can hear nothing else. You actually have to break through a glazed-over wall and EXPLAIN how mammoths have been extinct thousands of years and that tons of the stuff is mined every year. (oops, better not say 'mined'... how about 'harvested' or collected.):rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
I brought my sperm whale tooth to my dentist saying "my tooth came out can you put it back ??" It was worth seeing the look on his face !!
