Somewhere in my house, I have stashed away a similar shovel like the one below. Years ago, I remember I bought a small foldable shovel which came with a publicity sheet that said that the particular shovel has many uses.

Among them were cap opener, hammer, axe, for digging (of course) and saw (it actually has a serrated edge on one side).

Now that I recall that implement, I am inclined to question if this shovel is as remarkable as its printed claims.

Do the Russian soldiers still use this particular kind of shovel.

I am just curious.

Golok-- I don't know about the Russian soldier part, but Cold Steel makes a version. Fred Perrin likes it quite a bit. I've been meaning to pick one up for some time now. Maybe I'll ask for one for Christmas.

I have one of the Cold Steel shovels and a Glock entrenching tool and they are both extremely handy. The Glock folds and telescopes for a pretty small package that fits in a nylon bag that it comes with. The Glock also locks open in about three different positions and has a small saw in the handle but no bottle opener or axe.:)

I've had every folding shovel break or bend in rough terrain... Even the US issue shovel which is supposed to be the strongest bent in frozen ground. The weakness is in the locking mechanism and the metal around it. The plastic stuff worked it's way loose in a matter of a few days hard use. The fixed design of the Spetznaz and the thicker steel of the Cold Steel version eliminates that problem.
