Spetznaz survival machete

Well, I've never handled that "spetznaz machete",

maybe steel is excellent,
maybe grind is efficient,
maybe balance is very good,

maybe

but considering:
the Rambo-like goofy "survival" features (embossed ruler, hollow handle, saw back...),
the commercial "spetznaz" tag ,
the unknown steel,

I looks a lot like an ill conceived gadget.

And that sort of thing generally only comes in "low grade steel, poorly manufactured" flavour.

Despite that it could perfectly actually be OK, but I wouldn't bet the price they ask on that.

Edit: I love their manual:

"If you discover a new use for this tool or find a function we haven't mentioned here, please let us know"
Hilarous

I've looked at them at gun shows (and that's kind of pricey considering what I've seen some go for) and they seem OK. I don't care for the do it all tools because the wind up not doing anything really well....but...these have a saw back. That's an immediate leverright (leaver right where it is).

I've never seen a saw back that was well made and useful. Just a gimmick!

I agree.

I've seen some "real" machetes with sawbacks, ground with crappy tooth patterns that seemed designed to encourage use of the machete side. And those "Rambo" knives... forget it.

The blade on that Spetznatz thing looks a bit stout to be an effective saw. But it otherwise seems like a reasonable design. Kinda seems like a small kukuri better suited to mild digging/prying/nail pulling. If a company like Stanley sold one at Home Depot for $15.99, I'd say it's a reasonable multi tool.

I didn't see what your were talking about on that page but I'd buy it from somewhere else. The Compass that was on the page that opened for 59.95 sells for 19.95 at Harbor Freight.

I actually think the Siberian axe that they advertise on the same page as the machette is a very good deal. Might pick one of those up.

I grew up in Siberia and never saw axe like their 'Lumberjack' - very strange blade form.

Back around the 80s, spetznaz troops were fond of using a sharpened entrenching tool for hand-to-hand combat. I never knew of a special issue tool/weapon for them.
