Looking for a knife that falls somewhere between the size of the Case tiny trapper and medium stockman with a Spey blade. Haven't had much success finding anything. Will consider any brand and any number of blades. Any ideas?
Thanks

There's the Case 63087 version of the medium stockman. It's one of the smaller medium stockman patterns with a clip, spey, and pen blade. It's essentially the Case pen knife with the addition of a spey blade.

Thanks for the help. I will certainly take a look at that one.

Otherwise there's the Case Trappernut, which is a Peanut frame with a spey secondary. It's just a little bigger than the Tiny Trapper. Of course there's the Case Mini Trapper which has a full length spey but it's in the same size range as the mid range medium stockman patterns.

The TC barlow (as well as the #15 Farm Boy) is 3.5" closed.

jone, your question is a bit vague, because Case's definition of "medium stockman" is vague. the 44 pattern, which is a small 3.25" closed, while the hand-filling 47 pattern is 3 7/8" closed. Plus a few patterns inbetween.

There's an innumerable amount of 3 3/8" stockmans out there. The Schrade 34OT is one of the most common and popular of all time (just make sure you get an older USA made one). If you prefer a longer spay, look at the Case Trappernut or mini trapper.

Thanks guys. Didn't know about trapper nut. Have seen the TC Barlow and do like it. Planterz, it was a bit vague - really looking for something under 3.5" as I would like to carry it unobtrusively. I find my 4 1/4" stockman too large for me on an everyday basis but do enjoy using the spey for some basic EDC tasks. Just looking for options that are a little smaller and possibly a little thinner.
Thanks for the ideas and suggestions.

If you can, find store that sells Case knives (sometimes Ace or other hardware stores still do). That way you can get a feel for how big (or small) these knives actually are. On paper, a quarter inch doesn't seem like much, but it can make a huge difference in the overall size (and pocket imprint) of a knife. A 4.25" stockman is quite large, and a 3.5" or 3 5/8" knife like the mini trapper or 6318 is quite pocketable. The Peanut/trappernut is pretty small, but still capable. There's also the mini-moose at 3 5/8" with a clip and long spay on opposite ends. At 3 3/8" there's the Case 63090 pattern. I have a Camillus cigar stockman that is very similar, and it's a great little knife. Queen's small stockman is 3.25". And of course, there's the Schrade 34OT I mentioned above.

Thanks so much. I will check out those patterns. I agree - I will try to get my hands on a few before making a decision. Thanks again. I appreciate your time and knowledge.

Some time ago, I got this Kissing Crane small trapper that's a little bit bigger than the Case Peanut. I don't remember the exact size but its either 3" closed or just over.

Rough Rider makes a beautiful little (3-⅜") Eureka pattern stockman in four different handles.
From top to bottom: #407 Brown Stag Bone, #406 Dark Red Jigged Bone, #890 Yellow Composition, #372 Light Brown Jigged Bone.

I really like the Kissing Crane. Thanks for the info.

The Kissing Crane Medium Stockman features a 2 5/8" Stainless Steel clip blade…3 1/2" closed,

The Kissing Crane Mini Trapper features 3" Stainless Steel spey blade…3 1/2" closed,

The Charlow has a 2.75" Carbon Steel blade… 3 1/2" closed, weighs 57 grams

The Peanut has a 2 1/8" Carbon or Stainless Steel blade… 2 7/8" closed, weighs 33 grams

The single blade Charlow is the same thickness as the 2 blade Peanut, and most likely the Kissing Cranes are fatter and heavier than the single blade Charlow.

Thanks for specs. Good to know comparison to common peanut and Charlow.

Some size comparisons pics. Sorry for the poor lighting. These are the medium to smaller Case knives I own with spey blades.

Top to bottom:
Case 6207 Mini Trapper in Chestnut Bone CV
Case 6318 Medium Stockman in Amber Bone CV
Case 63087 Medium Stockman in Red Bone CV
Case 6220 Peanut in Chestnut Bone CV (for size comparison)

Next is a pic of the two Stockman patterns and the Peanut, clip blades open:

And finally, the 63087 (bottom) compared to the Case 6344 Medium Stockman (top), which is slightly shorter and slimmer, with a sheepsfoot in lieu of a spey.

Thanks for the pics. Love those knives, but especially that Case 63087 Medium Stockman in Red Bone CV. The width of that spey is nice and wide, and it's size makes is seem that it would be an easy pocket carry. Will seek out this pattern and try to put my hands on one.
Thanks for your continued help. It is much appreciated.

It's a nice little knife. I haven't carried mine yet. I picked it up in my occasional quest to own at least one of every Case production stockman pattern (and a few discontinued ones). I'm still missing a few. It's the only one I've run across so far that drops the sheepsfoot blade in favor of a spey. Usually the tradeoff is between spey/pen/punch. It's basically the Case Pen Knife with the addition of a second backspring and the spey blade.

Wow. Sounds like I might be on the search for awhile then! I suppose that's half the fun. Glad you found that one - sounds like it is in good hands. Enjoy it for years to come.
Thanks again. Off to begin the search...
