Maybe it was spending abour ten days in the hospital a few months ago, But I recall during the Gulf War a local commentator suggested sending the boys over there something spicy.

A larger size can of mexican seasoning, Mrs. Dash (flavors like onion, garlic, celery and other seasonings), cajun spice, curry seasoning, etc., and a smaller container to fill from the larger and drop in your pocket. To add kick to the meals.

Thought I'd suggest this and if you know anyone deploying, ask what they'd like to have. And give it to them.

I recall being at the camp up in South Dakota on the Ridge, on the last day a common rez soup being served by the hostess.
Rez soup has a way of being very thin and very flat. I was able to get some salt from a fellow camper that made the soup much more palatable.
It would have been much more nourishing if there had been a small puppy in the soup.;)
Sometimes the very simple things we all take for granted are often the ones missed most when we don't have them.
Wood ash of different kinds of wood were used as seasonings, with distinct different tastes, by many of my people with some of them being a good subsitute for salt.

Another thing to remember when deployed to almost any urban location is that in certain parts of the world the so called "dumb pigeons" that inhabit many of these areas are known as squab and in fact are said to be quite delicious.
A well thrown rock will bring one down.:)

I don't know about MRE's but often times the old "C" rations would have been much better if supplemented with fresh meat.;)

This is a great idea Rusty!! It kind of makes you think about the wonderful foods and tasts we have here and sometimes we take for granted!

Actually I assumed it was to burn out the taste buds so you could choke it down... :p :p :p :D

( Come to think of it I haven't had to wipe my forehead to keep the sweat from running into my eyes while eating a GOOD chicken curry in way too long. Time to cook up one of then 5 pound packages of chicken breasts in the freezer and freeze them back up in single serving bags with the skull and crossbones on the ones with the curry seasoning. )
