why r spiderco folders so expensive?
do they differ that much in quality than say crkt?

Spyderco offers models in all price-points throughout the production spectrum. Their fit and finish is top notch. They offer the best steels for the money at every price-point. IMO they are not expensive at all.
As far as QC differences, I happen to think CRKT's quality is excellent. for me the difference is the steel, it is a very noticable difference. With spyderco knives you not only get better steel but the heat treat, grind/profile, and reliability are top notch. I've had certain CRKTs (Aus-6) lose an edge rather quickly.

BTW welcome to the fold. Take a gander at the Spyderco forum, there's tons of useful info there.

CRKT is using AUS-6, which wont hold and edge for that long (but will take a beating). Spyderco is using VG-10 and S30V, both top of the line stainless steels. Spydercos with G-10 or carbon fiber handles will be more expensive than CRKT but the zytel Spydies can be had for under $50 (or cheaper here on the Exchange Forums). CRKT gives a pretty good bang for the buck but Spyderco will give you a better knife.

In a word, yes. Expense is relative, but in this case, you do get what you pay for. Spyderco makes, IMHO, some of the best production cutting tools for the money, period. The steel used has a lot to do with the price of a knife, and that's where Spyderco chooses to place most their emphasis.

Generally, the Spyderco knives have better locks than the CRKT knives

Not trying to be a smart a$$ at all: Quality dosnt cost, it PAYS!!!

CRKT make some great stuff but they cant beat spyderco IMHO

YMMV, but I doubt it. :)

In addition what others have mentioned, and I do agree with them, Spyderco also has IMHO better and more innovative designs.

Consider three of my favorite Spyies: Cricket, Native, Military.

Bought a Spyderco Endura 10 Years ago. It wasn't expensive and i still use it as my secondary EDC (zero Bladeplay after all those years!) along with a ChinookII which is really a HEAVY folder and still under 100$. I couldn t make knifes like this myself for this money and say CRKT can t either.

Well, they really are not expensive considering the quality construction and materials you get for the money. Spyderco knives are really an excellent value. Yes, Spyderco is much better than CRKT in all aspects. CRKT has QC problems and I'm not fond of the heat treat they do on their steels.

Spydercos are the only folders I own.The Military is my favorate.
I have had a few CRKTs but the heat treat on them sux.

Spyderco is a great company and have the best customer service. They use great steel and do an excellent job!

sypderco = $$$....?!??

I always think of spydies as beaters....easy to get, good edge, low cost....

ecmouse, wander over to the passaround forum and you can try them for yourself. Restricted to US addresses generally though.
