the wire wheel revealed a makers mark any ideas ? looks like an ''H'' within a shield. I plan on keeping this one for my truck so any ideas on refinishing will be helpful but as of now I might go with an Olive Drab paint job.........also who sells the 17'' handles for these ? ive been looking for over an hour an nothing but complete heads/handles no individual handles other then the longer ones

i see on ebay they have a chinese ''military'' looking one for $14.49 shipped lol no thanks but i like the look but i like vintage steel even more

The H in a shield makes me think of Herters. You know, the ammo company. They used to have a line of knives...just an idea, I have no idea. I'll see what I can dig up, though.

How big is that thing?

That's interesting. I have a big railroad adze with the same marking. Never was able to figure out what it meant.

Nice piece of work! Looks too pretty to cover it up with paint--I'd go with a few layers of clear lacquer. As far as the handle goes, maybe get a standard mattock handle and carve it down to size?

IIRC, House Handle has both short and long handles for the GI mattock listed in their online catalog. They give the eye dimensions to be sure it's the right size.

That's awesome. I want one that size!

Chinese versions are available at local hardware stores. The little one-handed pick mattock is a very handy tool. Mine hangs in my Carhart hammer loop during planting projects. It also goes in one of the car-camping boxes. Mine has a 2" x 1-1/2" eye. That House Handle GI pick handle that Steve mentioned would fit it with a little whittling.

Just give it a couple of coats and you're golden. If you only give it one coat it won't do you much good due to the nature of the work it does! :D
