I put this one together over the last few nights. The head is over 100 yr. old plow tip.
All that pitting is nature not mine. 7″ across with 2 1/2″ chopping edge. Hacksawed, hot cut,
forged on charcoal and quenched in water. Threw the haft held on with pine pitch and rawhide.
The haft was a Sweet Gum branch , drawfiled, oiled, toasted, scraped and waxed. No dye.
Rawhide wrap from some of my deer hide. A little fringe, beads and a hand rolled “snuff can tinkler” because I could.
I love the way the handle fits my hand on this one……Randy

And I really don't say this enough, LARGE thanks to Mr. John Cohea for resurrecting this great old style of 'hawk,
they are a ton of fun to make......

Another great piece! It looks natural next to the snake chopper. A mean pair showing real talent. Coodoos Bro.

Robin, Howard and Colog...THANKS for the great comments. This one was fun,
everything was already here, just needed putting together....

Nice combo. Are those some white heart glass red beads? Nice work. Looks like it was just unearthed from a past time. Regards Lee

Thanks Lee. It has some white hearts and shiny yellow and deep red. And some wooden.
All were in one little box from an antique fair....

Very unique looking piece...Does look like it would feel real good in hand. Great job !

That maybe true, but it took an artists eye to see the beauty and bring it out as you did. I love your work, you take objects you find around and manage to see that perfect possibility in their combination.
This is another GREAT JOB!!!
Rick

A big thank you to Randy Church.....Randy has taught me a lot about making knives, sheaths and about photography.
My work is not up to his level but I am gaining on him.

I hope you do not mind me hijacking your thread Randy.

Here is one I call Apocolypse Shank:

Made from an old file I found near an 80 year old plow. I would have used the plow for the blade but it needs another 20 years or so.
Scales are wood I had laying around. oiled, toasted, scraped, scortched, fried, smoked, salt and peppered, whipped, waxed, hog tied, not sanded, no dye. Wrapped with duct tape from my roll of duct tape. All hand work.

Aged with my own mixture of dirt, varnish, poop, 11 herbs and spices.

Guard is obviously made from another old file. Held on with pine pitch, bubble gum and 20 year old band aids.

IMG_5610.jpg

Lanyard from a 9 year old shoelace. A few feathers made from Food Lion bags just because I can.
Just what would have been on any chuckwagon.

Got the idea from Randy to make a sheath out of an old boot.

IMG_5611-1.jpg

No electricity used.

I hated the sheath so I threw it in the drawer for a while.

The new sheath fits like a glove

made a striker out of another old file and attached it to the sheath
This one will be used in the woods and I want to be able to get a fire going.

Starting to get a nice patina to the blade from some kitchen duty

This one is a keeper and is not for sale so please do not ask.

Thank You Randy for all your help and inspiration! :D

Hey Chris John, and thanks, means a lot coming from you....

Thanks Dusty. Always appreciated...

Thanks Rick, good to hear from you...

Brother Grafton, I told you to stick with it and someday your talent would rise to the top. I'm really impressed with your dedication to re-using materials, some of which I didn't know was available to inmates. I think with time and better meds your bevels will get better but the blunt file like tip is a definite improvement. The home depot makers mark may be pushing trademark, probably should ask first. The child size boot was a bad idea, maybe for a necker, I'll send you a full grown one, but the attachment for the fire starter is first rate, shows definite improvement with the motor skills. Hope you didn't hurt yourself....remember last time with the springy things...
Overall I'm truly impressed with your advancement in this time honored craft. I am as happy for you as any mentor could be and feel that with years and years of hard work and intense training you will succumb to your greatest challenge, kissing my talented ass....
Love ya Brother.....Randy

I had so much sh#$ I needed to get done today and ended up doing this and I have no idea why other than it just felt like the right thing to do.

The Food lion bags make the piece. It looked like hell before I did that.

Love ya back :D

It sets us apart from the animals, the ability to accessorize. Awesome, I laughed my arse off. Did you recognize that piece of hairy hide?

Yep. I saw that.

Glad you got a laugh. I got one too. The product was garbage but I had about as much fun making it as anything I have ever made.
