Spill plane for firestarting

looks super cool! Thanks for the link! My dad'll be psyched. He has a ginormous wood stove for the house and he'd love that.

I saw that in their catalog as well - and it's a cool looking tool, but I suspect if you really feel the need for a tool other than your knife for making shavings, you'd have better luck with a spoke shave, since the spill plane needs to be anchored to work safely.

Spoke shave... I hadn't seen that before... like a mini draw knife, sweet tool!

The weight is a wee bit up there , but seems like a useful tool. At the very least , a good partner to have for the backyard fire-pit. True , it does need to be fixed down in use , so a campsite (usually furnished with a picnic table) would suffice as a workbench. Not really a backpacking item , but intriguing.

Weight issue. Pencil sharpener instead. Great wood tool though. I love planing. It's gratifying to get that smooth roll of wood.

Spoke Shave? There was a little tool being sold that looked like a minature sickle with a squared off tip......Major Surplus had them I believe. Is that what a "spoke-shave" looks like? I've heard my dad talk about them, used when wagons (circa 1920's east Texas) were still a primary means of moving loads. Seems that if you had to replace a wheel spoke it had to be a near excact duplicate of the others or it would cause the wheel to vibrate. Just wondering if thats what that tool is.

There is this great tool for making shavings, that fits right in your bag. It is called a KNIFE! ;)

You can make everything you need with a good knife and knowing how to use it. I think we get caught up on gear at times and not the method for using it.
