Anyone know what the 'P' and '55' represent? On ES and Spiller I had thought the numbers on the underside by the eye were representative of date, but I saw in another thread that for another maker they were the smith's mark.

Thanks for any help.

I've heard it conjectured that the number on the poll is the year, and the letter is the smith's mark. I've never put the work into verifying it though, because I know they are good axes and that's what I care about more than anything. So don't take my word for it!

The number under the poll is indeed the date of manufacture, they're common on most E&S axes from what I've seen. Is the P across from the 55?

Yes, double-bit with '55' on one side and 'P' on the other. The 'P' has a bit of a tail on the upper side. I do not see a letter on the second axe, only a '46', but it is marked up a little more.

P and W are common marks in that place. I think they're smith marks, or at least that's what I've been told. There's a part in the Pioneer Axe making video on YouTube where they mark it, re watching it might show where he stamps it?

P should be for Pearly Pulcifer, W for Watson (cant remember his full name). Or at least thats the common rumor here, all I have seen are employee photos with those names. Last I knew Spiller wasnt connected to E&S and didnt use E&S employees though, but someone said lending a hand was common. Hmm.

Edit: Those were employees of E&S, thus the confusion over Spiller...

Good call on that video, but it's a single-bit. Not seeing any stamping in the video, although I thought it was in there as well.

My ES has a 'W' near the poll, just above the ES stamp.
