It's extremely loud, if the neighbors were closer I would think they would call the cops!

I'm using ceder everything except the bow. What's causing this?

The set is working okay, getting tons of blackening and some smoke but its hard work!

Add more pressure when the smoke starts and when you think you've got it, keep goin a bit longer.

Not enough friction. Add a pinch of sand or roughen the hearthboard and spindle tip.

Well I added pressure and it takes the squeal away once it gets warmed up.

Got a small ember going, this is hard work, hands are tired and so is my bow arm, maybe ill try again tomorrow!

The spindle and the hearth are getting worn down faster than I though!

Cedar being soft, and easy ,wears down fast. I like to make a few starters along the fireboard to save time. When I first started I would get home from work and start three or four coals before going in to make dinner. I can't tell you what the subtle changes were, but it got easier to fire up after some practice. Keep at it.

What's the diam of your spindle?
How long is the bow?
How thick is your fireboard?
