i recently recieved the knivesshipfree newsletter, in the letter was a photo of a rc knife with the coating filed off of the spine jimping and a article about it.
Has anybody done this, and if so used it as a flint striker. i just did both my
rc4 and izula and i'm on the fence about the results. i understand the concept and proper technique for steel and fire rod. so anybody got any experience with this on their rat's?

I think it'd be way easier just to bring a 2 gram piece of scrap steel than potentially ruin your knife due to exposed high carbon steel.

I think you'd need to sharpen up some of the edges to get a good ammount of sparks.

thats what i was thinking too. i put a decent angle on the edge of the jimping, just in comparision to the striker provided with the firesteel the rc's were falling behind. i'm sure with practice and finetuning some more the rat's will perform up to par. either way i'm still packing the striker too.
i'll take some pics tomorrow gotta work later tonight

I filed some coating off my RC3 the other day and while it does indeed work as a striking surface, you'd need to really get a good sharp right angle to really throw proper sparks.
