Spine wacking, white knuckling?

Hello Guys,

I need a hand here: I'm afraid my knowledge of the fine English language is lacking once again: in knife reviews on the web there is often being refered to both 'spine wacking tests' and 'white knuckle tests'. What are these?
Though the names look somewhat self-explanatory, I'm not quite sure what they mean. (By the way, I am not enquiring as to the validity of these tests, I am aware opinions differ greatly concerning the latter, but feel free to comment on this if you thus desire, it's an open forum as I understand it :) ).

Thanks, Christiaan.

I think I should have read the other posts on this particular forum first, would have saved you guys from having to read the above....:D

I just noticed a post about ten posts back dealing with spine wacking... so that settles that..

I still would very much like an explanation regarding the white knuckle thing, if somebody would...

Thanks again, Christiaan.

Thanks again, Christiaan.

"White kuckle" means to hold the open folder very tightly in the hand...In fact, tight enough to where the lock on a back-lock could be depressed enough to un-lock the blade, unintentionally.

Great, glockmann, clears it up. I'd been wondering about that one for a while now..

Thanks, Christiaan.

The other type of lock subject to a white knuckle test is a Liner Lock.

On some knives the base of the Index Finger can accidently disengage the Liner Lock in a tight grip. The CRKT KISS knives are also very succeptible to this.

ahhh its so nice to have replaced my $!%^(no name needed imho), w/a strider for my mega carry size folder - never again do i have to worry about the question, is spine whacking abuse? not w/a strider it aint - very hard to unintentionally unlock also

SIFU1A,

It looks like you might want to change your "user-name" to STRIDER1A, 'eh?.:)

I think one detail was left out, though you might have figured it out already. "White Knuckling" refers to you grasping ANYTHING so tight that your knuckles turn white. You know, when you ride the scary rides at a fair and you ar egrasping the safety bar so tight that your knuckles turn white? The idea is to grasp a folder hearlly hard to see of the lock disengages. This is important for a fighting folder. People can grasp things with a "death grip" when their lives are on the line, so you don't want your folder lock disengaging while you are doing that!

hey glockman i knew that would get your goat lol - hey sifu means teacher too lol i am trying to teach - anyway point taken - BUT i do like that strider .................when it was new, it was a BIT#! to unlock at all much less fail - no insult meant bud

A "white knuckle" grip together with a twisting action can sometimes be the true "test of fire" for a liner lock knife. You would have to stick the blade into something so you could apply twisting force.
