spine whack test

Hey, Derrick, As one Iverson to another... I have a GB that has absolutely no blade-play up or down, and none side to side, either. I haven't had any problems with the the lock-up of mine, but I am sure if you send it in to the Strider fellas it will be made right. I am going to send my GB in for a tune-up, and have no doubt it will come back better than new. I have seen the pics that Shelby has posted, and and can't wait to send mine in....

P.S Mick, Duane, Steve (or anyone else at Strider) , Rob Simonich, Tom Mayo and Jerry Hossom... (I can't wait 'til I get to a show and see YOUR booth) Have no worries regarding who will DRIVE... (saw your post regarding beer for Forumites, Rob and Duane) If you come to Washington and want to drink straight out of the fermentors (bright tanks) I'll take care of the tab for the Beer AND the food. later...

Very important info:
You reminded me when you said you used a log.
If you whack your knife against something solid, a log, the ground, etc. It will more than likely fail.
This isn’t just your Strider. Any liner lock. It is physics.
Look at the weight of the blade and how far it is from the fulcrum point (pivot). When you spine whack, if you choose to, us a table or something that is not totally solid. If you were to look at the locking bar in slow motion when you whack against something, you would freak. The thing bends WAY out of whack. Even ours which is made of .1” 6/4 Ti.
Whacking the spine creates a huge amount of leverage/force.
Mechanically speaking, something has to give/flex/break.
We thought about making a safety that would not allow the lock bar to open at all. But decided it was catastrophically damaging to the overall geometry of the knife when you begin to abuse it. (This is the same reason our stop pin may look small to you. If we used one that could never wear out, other parts of the blade would suffer. The pin is hugely strong, yet can be easily replaced).
The Pivot is obviously the most important eliminate in the strength of a folder. Even with our over- kill pivot, we have a heavy blade weight and a long angle of leverage.

That being said,
Please send in your blade so that I can check it out.

Thanks

Mick
