I am relatively new to collecting knives and confused by the "jargon" of you pros. I've read many posts and still can't figure out what you all are saying most of the time.
1. What is the spine whack test?
2. What is a liner?
3. What is a linerlock?

That's about it that confuses the heck out of me. Sooner or later it will get better. Time is the key. Thanks a bunch. Any comments on the Military? Is this "the" best folder from Spyderco? Don't know where to spend the paycheck.

Wow, good questions for a rookie. I'll answer as best i can till the pros get here...
Spine Whack test~
Rapping the spine of the blade on the edge of a table top to make sure the lock will hold. *Not recommended!!*

The liner is the steel lining the inside of the handle material. (Someone please explain this better than that...!)

And the liner lock is a lock that nests inside the handle, rather than on the back of the knife (which would be a lock-back)

I love ya, Danelle, but I definitely disagree.

Tap that spine and make sure the lock works.

I have tried to explain "Lockback" and "Liner Lock" under "Basic Knife Talk" on my web page, www.chaicutlery.com , about halfway down the main page.

There is a good drawing of lockback and liner lock innards, and a lot of definitions of terms on Spyderco's page at www.spyderco.com/spyderco_products.html

A.G. Russell, one of the oldest, most knowledgable and professional dealers out there, has a "Knife Encyclopaedia" at www.agrussell.com/faq/index.html .

Good hunting.
