You know it's your favorite quote. So, have you ever seen one? Do you have pics? What do you see in your mind's eye when you hear "spinning cyclone of death"? Cool or funny. Fantasy, fake or real. Post 'em if you got 'em.

Here is one of my all time favorites. I remember seeing this photo many years ago and when I heard "spinning cyclone of death" I didn't picture an over-caffeinated mall ninja (well maybe for a nanosecond); I remembered this:

AC119TracerPattern.jpg

Time lapsed photo of an AC-119G Shadow being a spinning cyclone of death, laying it down in Vietnam. You can't see them in the photo, but there are eight very large blades (also spinning) making this cyclone a reality.

All those lines you see are made by tracers. That is a gunship firing a major quanity of ammo at ground targets.

Pretend I'm stupid. :D

What exactly Is happening In that picture?

A whole bunch of guys on the ground are getting their butts shredded. That's what's happening.;)

The plane (not visible) is flying in the upper right of the photo in a counter-clockwise arc pattern from right to left (the white line=muzzle flashes, the orange are tracers).

(Now how do I know that the plane was flying in a counter-clockwise direction???) ;):D

That is an aerial gunship, an AC130, also known by its code name "spooky," attacking. Every n-th round is a tracer to help with targeting which is how you can "see" the hail of bullets in the air. It's a time-lapse photograph, but it does give you an idea of what this weapon system does. It basically creates an artificial sand storm -- a sandstorm in which the "grains" of sand are 25mm (just about one inch in diameter) and going 1500MPH. Basically, if you are on the ground under one of these planes when it attacks, there's not going to be much left of you.

Could be an AC-130, or an AC-119, or perhaps even an AC-47. As there were more 119s than the others, I'd guess a 119... but who knows??

Since the caption says it's a AC-119G, I'd probably go with that for a guess.

As for me I was thinking more in terms of Turbo Power Rangers....

My guess would be either:

A: The GAU-2/A 7.62 mm is mounted on the port side

OR

B: You took the picture

How's that for a guess?:D

Now come clean brother!

Taylor

another great example is the male actor with a balisong in each hand walking down a hallway of zombies in the hospital to rescue his gal. he is dropping them 2 at a time. movie is a "b" class cult classic called Planet Terror.--dennis

A: is right. The port (left) side of all these birds (AC-130, AC-119, AC-47) is the "mean" side so they flew counter-clockwise on mission.:)
