Hi Guys,
Yep VML That Beja or Hadendoa dagger is as good an example as ive come across so far.
Well Ferrous , having seen your art work thats praise indeed, but then I know you can see how good that carving is, I wish you could see it in 3d It has lots more fine detail than the pix capture.
Its the original Staskniv.
Perhaps The most skilfull part, but easy to overlook to my mind, is the gently tapered oval hollowng of the inside of the scabbard to match the external profile of the knife. That bits not so showy but not many men {or is that any men alive today?} could do it as smoothly & finely as this is done. It grips tight but still releases! Most skilled carvers would just make it in 2 sandwhiched parts.
Even the fret work varies on each side of the scabbard , so it was carved through not fret sawed.
Must admit Kis , I have had many great bargains on ebay but this one was surreal!
I love it for what it is, & the blade craftsmanship & carving skill thats gone into it.
Its true its worth hundreds of $, & in Norway his work is bought for museams, but if Louen had been Americas top church carver & knife smith of the same date it would be worth many thousands , which is I guess a reflection of sociological & ethnographic value rather than just the true art form of the knife & carving?
Mind you would I have still found it peanuts?
Aaaaaaahhhh But I digress, I see old D.coyote is having a bid on the "title" knife, & I used to watch the road runner show, so I dont want to step on his toes! Hes had enough hardships in life.
Guess Ill have to find to just keep hunting,
but cheers for the thought.
