Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows the value of the Spirit of 76 Buck knife?.
also the Akonua model?.

Thanks
Jeff

Not too sure why, but Levine's Guide to knives states the Spirit of '76 listed for $200 when it came out and in '92 was worth $175. Perhaps that is because they made 7600 which is on the higher end of their limited editions. Anyone think I am reading this wrong?

All the info I could find on the "Akouna" was the Buck 402 Pearl Akouna and Levines states that Buck just made 4. Not list price. Is your knife pearl handled? If it is you may have yourself a truly rare knife.

Were there any other Akouna models?

I hope this helps you.

Jeff,
The last post was correct on the Spirit of '76 knife. We made a lot of them and they are relatively easy to find now. Still a nice looking knife for a collection in my opinion. The Akanua and the Kalinga came out in about 1970. The Kalinga was first. Al Buck wanted a nice knife that sold in the more expensive (at the time) range of $50. The earliest ones had black fibron handles and later we switched to rosewood colored handles. Your best bet on current value is to check out one lf the online auctions and see what folks are getting. They are on there all the time.
I find it amusing but they are often advertised as "Rare" or even "one of a kind, never in production". We made about 60,000 of the Kalingas and about the same amount of Akanuas before they were discontinued last year.
Hope this helps,

Jeff,
If we can just find you that pearl handled one then you'd really be set........

Thanks Joe and others for the good info.

I purchased a Spirit of '76 last year on eBay for $99 plus shipping. I was very pleased to get it for that low price. Most on eBay seem to go for a bit more. This is a very nice knife for a collector. I am very pleased with mine.

I checked a couple of internet sites on the Akanua and Kalinga (out of curiousity). Brian at discountknives still has both of these listed for under $90. Several other sites have at least one listed for under $90. Didn't see a pearl handled 402 though.

Just a quick bit of information. The Kalinga, model 401, was designed by my uncle Frank. He passed away in 1974 in an auto accident. My grandfather (Al) then designed what he considered a more useable/less radical knife, little straighter blade, smaller handle etc (the Akonua, model 402).

Guess fathers and sons been second guessing each other's tastes for ages.

Both were successful products.

Mr. Buck,
Was Levine's wrong in stating that only 4 402 models exist? That just doesn't seem right to me.

Thank you.

Greg,
I could not find where in Levine's that he talked about the 402's. What page and what edition are you looking at?
If Levine's says that there are only 4-402's, that is not correct.

All,
Without actually looking up the info in LG
I suspect he is referring to some commemorative issue of which only 4 were made. Check out the Buck section of LG for
special edition or commemorative knives.
Larry

Hi Joe,
Larry is right, it was listed in the commemorative section in the 4th edition, page, 143.

thanks Joe, I seem to understand now.
