This story started several months ago, when
a gentleman purchased one of Audra's knives that she submitted for her master smith test. After a few calls and e-mails this Gentleman also asked about the MS Dagger. Audra replied that it was probably the hardest thing that she has had to do in her knifemaking career. She added that while a lot of heart and soul went into this knife, it was, after all, just a knife, and available for sale, as the money would go a long way towards bills. Several days later a check arrived for the dagger..... It is hard to describe the emotions that went through Audra , at first she couldn't believe that it had sold, she was ecstatic, thrilled that someone thought enough of her work to pay a large sum of money. So she takes the dagger out to the shop, one last time, to give it a good cleaning and polish... Then the memories started flooding back, about all the time that went into this knife, and what it represented to her. It was a tangible piece of her work, that she would display proudly at knifeshows all over the country, And she could say "see there, I did it!" Here is the 1st master dagger made by a woman. Me!!
She sat down to write a letter of Authenticity tears streamed down her face, as she prepared to part with, this part of her.
she finished the letter, mailed the knife off , cashed the check, and life went on... Today a package arrived, in it was the Dagger and a note that says,
I quote." Hi Audra- I'm Baaaack! Why? Well, I got the unmistakable impression from your notes when I was buying the Dagger that there was an internal debate going on. On one side was your head saying, "it's a knife and it'll bring some well deserved cash." while on the other side your Heart was saying, "I poured my all into making it." And in the end, reason edged out emotion.
Meanwhile , you should be able to be saying, to all that come near, "See there, I did that!" So, I'm saying," Merry Christmas."
Audra was crying as she read the note.. Wow.. That touched this grouchy old mans heart! The spirit of Christmas is alive and well!!!
Thank you Seth! Mike Draper
