Spit balls on Carbon Steel blades

I attended my first Blade show this year as an exhibitor and ran into a huge problem, the spit ball stains on my carbon steel blades. Does anybody have a definite answer to this problem? I have a Bowie with a small stain that will not come out and am going to have to refinish the blade, thankfully it's a takedown. I am new to the blade forums and would appreciate any input.

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to Bladeforums!

I have to wipe my knives down with a dry paper towel or something like that, about every 15 to 20 minutes to make sure the spit doesn't have a chance to stain the blade.

I would recommend you try posting questions about knives you have in "shop talk-bladesmith questions and answers" if you do not get any answers here. It is very active and there are lots of great mastersmiths that are on there regularly. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=741

I'm not a maker, but I use Flitz polish to remove the patina on my blades as well as water marks after use. It shines up the blade nicely without altering the original finish.

Excuse the question, but what exactly are "spit ball stains"? I assume you don't mean the paper balls 3rd graders spit...

Excalibur025 the spit balls are stains on your blades you get from talking over your knives to people at your table. Bill thanks for the idea of paste wax I'll give it a try. Kgd are you using the Flitz on Stainless as well as Carbon steel blades? Kyle, did you end up with any stains on your blades after the show. I bought some of that Tuf Cloth stuff you suggested but I think it was already to late. Thanks again for the Ivory class I really appreciate it, and also the heads up about Shop-talk bladesmith question and answer forum.
