Spitfire upgrade

I see that a popular buck distributer has a spitfire available in S30V... I'll probably pick one up. I'd really like to see one in 5160. Anybody know if there plans for that in the future?

^yep. for bigger blades/fixed where 5160 shines, i like it. for a folder s30v is far superior for normal use. having said that i bought a 110 and 112 in 5160 just cause.......

Me three.

I don't see the appeal of 5160 for a folder. I can see the appeal of 1095 and given a choice between 1095 and 5160 for a folder, would pick 1095 every day of the week. As for the choice between Buck's 420HC and well done 1095... all other things being equal, I'd pick 420HC actually.

The Reaper (fixed blade) might be the smallest knife in the line that makes sense to me to do in 5160. It's designed for some amount of chopping.

The upgrade I'd like to see on the Spitfire is a full flat grind. I find the Slimline (the Walmart version) to be a decent shop knife but find it to be horrible slicer due to the thick blade and abrupt shoulder on the hollow grind. It's one of the reasons mine doesn't get carried too much.

I agree, 420hc and s30v are fine choices. The funny thing is that everybody says you only need a tough steel like 5160 in a large fixed blade but as it turns out I'm always reprofiling folders for friends after they break the tip off. I think a 5160 spitfire would make a good beater at a good price that is USA made.

and that's reason enough...same as why i wanted the 5160 110 and 112....just cause

that's cause your friends are using it as a prybar or screwdriver or some other non knife task or dropping it and not taking care of their tools. 5160 wont stop that cause they'll just leverage it harder til it does give or drop it more and from higher heights..;)

I like carbon steel too but I want as much carbon in it as possible for a folder. 👍

As for breaking tips, I bet you could make the Spitfire/Slimline out of glass and still not be able to break the tip. That's one beefy tip😄

Copper and Clad has a Spitfire in S30V available now. SK Blades has been teasing us with a future release of a Spitfire in S35VN. Both of these sound great.

I would consider a Spitfire in 5160. I really like what Buck does with 5160. My 110 has been very sharp, very tough and it has been surprisingly rust resistant. I carry it often.

Watch your December BCCI newsletter for an exclusive offer - planning to be on hand in time for pre-Christmas delivery. The club version is navy blue with club logo and gray spacer, S30V blade, and will be attractively priced.
