split handles...not a new problem

Here's a great old workhorse from the mid 1800s that has suffered more than a nominal crack on the grip. Lost its bolster and an interesting buttplate, but one of the owners got some heavy duty wire, fixed it up and probably used it for many years.

Nice thing is the handle is still there and working even though it has taken some severe hits.
