I was drilling a lanyard hole in a piece of S7 steel and it split around the tang where I was drilling the hole. Anyone ever experience this bizarre occurance?

It thought it was a piece of wood !! I'll bet you had alloy banding there perhaps even a stinger of inclusions or carbides .

mete, does this mean there is something wrong with the steel? I went ahead and heat treated it and it's being tempered as I write this. I'll keep it as a beater.

I called the company I bought it from and from talking to them I probably overheated it while grinding or drilling. I thought I'd pass that along to others so it doesn't happen to anyone else. I usually keep it cool, but one can get by you once in awhile.:(

Steel companies never make bad steel just like users never heat treat it wrong !!

hehehe, you got that right.:D This happened before I HTed it. The hardening didn't change the split and so far the tempered hasn't affected it either.

You didn't overheat it enough by drilling it. Mete's right. You have a bad seam of something in it. I would recommend against selling it. It's hard but sometimes you just have to take a blade that seems OK but has hidden problems, out of circulation.

Skill is important but reputation is everything.

Don it is going to the scrap pile. I would never sell anything that had a problem like that. I just HTed it because I had another blade to HT anyway. I may use it as a beater knife around the yard.
Fred, S7 is air or interrupted oil quench. The guy I talked to also said sometimes when steel is made it may "laminate".
