Hey guys, so I was really wanting to get the Fiskars 28inch Chopping axe, but after doing some research found out that they have stopped producing it :( So now i'm stuck...i'd like to get either a Fiskars or a Gerber axe...and since i'm 6'4', it has to be sort of long. Both companies make a splitting axe that is around 28 inches. But my question is, can I use a splitting axe for the same use as a chopping axe? I know the head designs and weights are different, but i'm just wondering...thanks!!

I think their splitting axe has too wide of wedge shape for effective chopping. And at 6'4" you're going to be happier and safer with a 36" handle. With a longer handle a missed or glancing blow will more likely strike the ground. With a 28" handle it's more likely to hit your shin. A 3-4 pound vintage North American single bit axe will both chop and split well.

Did a spliting comparison a few weeks ago. Council Tool Velvicut Dayton vs a Kelly Perfect Michigan. It was a draw. Both are on 36" hafts. Both also excel at chopping. I'd look for a vintage Kelly Perfect or a Kelly Flint Edge, Dayton or Michigan pattern on Ebay. They come up often. Hard to beat American vintage steel axes.

Thanks for looking, Double Ott
