When I saw this on BushcraftUK I tought, "Of course." It's always obvious when someone points it out to you.

How to get at the center of a log to try to find dry wood to burn when you have no axe or stout knife BUT you do have a saw.

Saw half through the thickness of the log/branch at right angle to the length of the log and about 50% along that length.

Grasp the log with the cut down and strike the log above the cut against a large rock/stump/log.

The log will tend to split lengthways, opening the center.

That works on really easy to split wood like clear pine, try it on a piece of twisted spruce. What you can do is saw off sections, ie. "cookies", or just cut them partially and leave them shallow (thin) enough to break. In both cases its a worst case senario, like how do you cut down a tree with a small puukko. It can be done, buts its really inefficient, there are much better tools. But hey, you might always not have what you want on hand so learn to make the most of them.
