In the past 7 1/2 months I've been using my damascus peanut, I think I may have become a bit spoiled by the steel. This has been my very first experience with damascus steel, and in daily use, it has been a very nice thing. Breaking down cardboard boxes, opening mail, cutting open mulch bags, cutting twine and rope, some food use as a paring knife, and lots of other pocket knife duties. It has required very little sharpening, only light touch ups now and then.
Once in a while I go back to use one of my other pocket knives out of a sense fairness that I should rotate them. When I do, I'm disappointed in how they cut and stay sharp. As much as I love my CV steel peanuts, the Thomas damascus beats them out. I'm not even going to try to bring my two remaining sak;s into the field, it's a no contest. I've yet to stack it up against Buck's 420HC with the Bos heat treat, but I may have to challenge my bud Wayne to a slice off with his 309 companion.
This in part is why I've become so attached to my damascus peanut, the edge holding and grabby edge it has. It loves to bite into whatever it's cutting, even smooth plastic vs fiberous stuff like hemp or jute cordage.
I know that Case does not have it in their lineup on a regular basis, and what's available in it varries from year to year. But this stuff is sooo nice, that now when I see a Case in damascus I'm tempted to get it even if it's a different pattern, like a canoe or whatever. I've become spoiled by Mr. Thomas's damascus. Too bad Case does not have more of this stuff. It's damm good good stuff.
I wonder if Case would bring out a nice medium Texas jack or stockman in this stuff?
Carl.
