Gentlemen! I have 2 Jerseys that I plan to hand within the next few weeks, and am in need of a recommendation on a spokeshave. I currently use hand sanding and light chisel work to fit the "V" down into position, but this takes me nearly 3 hrs of solid work to make it look nice. Should I look into a concave or flat (or either) spokeshave? What is a good quality brand to buy? Thanks in advance.

I have a flat bottom Stanley (I think it's a Stanley. I haven't been able to find it for a while.) It works fine. Be sure to cut with the grain and not against it. This usually means pulling on one side of the handle, and pushing on the other.

As I understand it, the old ones are hit and miss. I have a straight iron Veritas that I love, though i've been on the look out for a curved one as well. I think veritas makes both. But, I think you could probably get 3 stanleys for the price of one veritas.

Thanks for the responses. Should I go to a woodworking supply store or would home depot or lowes carry the spokeshave?

Depends on how much quality you need, and how much money you want to spend. I only use mine for axe helves, so I wasn't going to drop $100 bucks on one. I just went to the local hardware store and bought what I thought was 'decent' one. A Stanley, like I said. And I've been happy with it.

But, no matter how much money you spend, if it's dull it ain't worth anything. Perhaps a good compromise is to buy a cheaper 'decent' spokeshave. Then take some of the money you saved and buy a nice stone (if you don't have one already.)

yeah, thats good advice nick. it dosent matter how much you spend on woodworking tools. if their dull their worthless anyway... a good stone (s) and the ability and know how as to using them is an absolut in woodworking...

You can get vintage spoke shaves on ebay for under 25 bucks, and the quality is likely better than most spoke shaves you can buy today for 2 or 3 times that price.

Yep, I paid under $10 shipped for mine. A little clean up and sharpening, and it works like a charm.
