I used rawhide for the blade covers, dyed, beaded with very early pony beads C1840ish, decorated with a morning star and fiddlehead ferns on the sheath and ferns in brass tacks on the haft.

Here's a hawk I just finished (awaiting clothing). 5/32nds sawmill blade steel, hickory haft with perfect grain alignment, wrapped in jute that I soaked in thinned carpenters glue, dyed and waxed. Head is through the haft, wedged and pinned with a copper pin under the wrap. Haft is 20 1/2 inches top to bottom, spontoon blade is 5 inches, spike is just under 3 inches. Throws great, sticks deep. Hope you enjoy.

Best regards

Robin

Hay Pipeman....Beautiful piece....Havent been here in a long time, you still do nice work !

Beautiful as usual Robin! I want to know where all the hawk guys went? I like the axes too, but the hawks are my real love.

Fantastic!

Can you elaborate on this process a little more? I imagine it has to be wrapped while still wet with the glue. Then is it dyed in place on the haft or before the glue soak? What's the dilution?

Hi Howard
Thanks for your comments. The forum changes constantly but is getting very busy which is great. I'm learning a lot of great information on axes from the super collectors on here. I'll be making more hawks soon and will post pics for you Bro ;-))

Hi Bro
I dye the haft first from the top to where the handle wrap begins. Then I lay a bed of glue full strength where the handle wrap will be. I wrap the handle jute into the glue and let it set for 15 minutes or so. Then I dye the jute and light it on fire to burn most of the hair off the jute, then soak it in the thinned glue with an art brush(about like coffee cream). I give it a couple of coats making sure the ends of the wrap are saturated. The after it dries I burn it again, then coat it with furiture wax also with an art brush to get it deep into the jute and then burn it again, then buff it with a dremel buffing wheel after the wax is good and dry. Hope this helps.
