Spoon carving with the Work Hawk

Today I carved some spoons using my Work Hawk. I'm not the greatest spoon carver anyway, but my goal was to see how far I could go with just the tomahawk, starting from a piece of firewood. This is an Osage orange spoon which turned out ok except for the horrific inside of the bowl. A more skilled carver could have done better with the hawk there I'm sure. I'll probably clean it up with a gouge and I'll post the finished spoon then.

I also made a real boring video of me roughing a spoon from some beautiful cherry, the camera died before reaching the end. I may finish that spoon up tomorrow and I'll post some pictures if I do. It's a challenge to not go in and grab my gouges, knives, or hook knife, but a lot of fun.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks for the compliments! Finished it up today - to be fair, I use this gouge every day so it felt like cheating from that point on. I find that gouges for me are much more controllable than a hook knife on wood that is anything but the greenest.

I've done a few spoons, but not with a hatchet. That would be a real challenge for me.

Well done.

I didn't find it boring at all. Hope you finish it. It would be neat to see how you hollow out the bowl.

Thanks for posting.
