Hello WSS, this is my first post in this subforum....greetings from Richmond,VA!
I got inspired by you guys to carve my first spoon. I tried to ID the leaf via the google and the closest thing I could find was red maple,(can anyone confirm this?).

I used my brand-spanking-new Andrews bushcrafter as well as a Todd Rexford resonance for the bowl and finer bits.

While it was a lot of fun, it became fairly obvious that my spoon was not going to be very functional, so I decided to turn it into more of a "sculpture" and give it to my Father as one of his Christmas gifts :D

Both knives (esp. the Andrews) worked really well.
Feet are wine corks attached with a little gorilla glue and a small brass screw.
Entire thing covered in multiple coats of amber shellac.
Thanks for looking. Oh yeah...almost forgot, the little balls in the bowl are acorns!

Looks like a sweet gum leaf. Can you get any pictures of the tree itself, maybe seeds from it if possible, bark texture, etc.

why wouldn't that spoon be usable? just it would make a better cooking spoon/ladle than an eating spoon. But as long as you cut it off that large chunk of wood, it would be a perfectly viable spoon.

I was thinking the smae thing. Looks like a good ladel to me...maybe a little more out of the bowl.

I've always liked the shape of Brian's Bushcrafters, nice looking knife.
