Sports use?

Here in Colorado, it's illegal to carry a knife with a blad >3.5", but that does NOT include a "hunting or fishing knife, carried for sports use".

I really like carry a fixed-blade knife, but many of the ones I like are >3.5".

I was wondering if I bought a custom knife that was clearly marketed as a "hunting knife" -- something by Neil Blackwood, specifically, if I could raise it's "sports use" as a defense? Or do I have to be actively HUNTING? I'm a little confused as to what the "for sports use" phrase means.

Here in Tennessee you have to be actively hunting. Even if you could carry it and use hunting as the reason you would be limited to the hunting season. :(

Interpreting a phrase in a statute, such as "for sports use", is where case law comes into play. You may also get help from the legislative history of the statute or any written opinions by Colorado's Attorney General, if they are available. I would consider using www.findlaw.com or www.romingerlegal.com to search Colorado's cases and determine whether any court has ever construed that language. You might then have some useful guidance on whether the character of the knife or your activity at the time determines whether the exception applies.

Another option is to ask law enforcement if they have any written enforcement guidelines on the subject. Oral advice by LEOs can be interesting, but I wouldn't want to rely on it because a different officer may have a different view of how the law should be applied.

Yeah, I'm slowly getting rid of my EDC's with >3.5" blades and my auto's.

Eyeing an advertised as 3.4" Mini-Commander.
