Hey all,

I have a # 12 bowie with a # 14 grind due next year. I can't remember but does anyone know if this has a sharpened top clip or not?

Thanks

Hey, thanks....

Boy, I dont know how I missed that in the description.

How does she handle? Pretty light in the hand is she?

It depends on the handle material. Brass hilt / butt, stag or micarta. I think all Randall knives are well suited for their design. If someone goes overboard, they generally ruin the balance the shop originally intended. I bet yours will be just fine.

I have two of these. It is a substantial knife.

This one has Nickel Silver furniture (Forward Curved Double Hilt and Butt Cap):

This one has Brass furniture:

Lunde brings up a good visual point - brass and NS weigh just about the same, and both are much heavier than aluminum. On a larger bladed I'd definitely go with a match brass or NS end cap, depending on how your knife is scheduled to be built - a $60 option worth its weight in gold IMO.

Not only will it look nicer, it'll balance better too. Also, if you can get a lanyard hole drilled for a few bucks more, and maybe even go with a no-cost radiused end cap, you'd be set.

Looking forward to seeing pics once it arrives!

Thanks for the input!

I actually cannot remember what option I went with, but I seem to recall it was the brass guard like on Ken's second pic and a brass butt cap. With a stacked leather handle.

I remember discussing it with someone there and they recommended a matching guard and butt cap.

I was keen on brass for the antique look, which is what I was wanting to achieve...

Well, not so very long now......

I like the Sportsman's Bowie, and those above are beautiful ones!

I had one and sold it. I can't remember why, now. Someone out there has one with a nickle silver #1 style hilt, a black micarta handle with Border Patrol shape, a NS butt cap, drilled for a lanyard, and my name (Bruce Woodbury) engraved on it. It looks like a very large #14! He's probably thinking, "this guy must be some kind of knucklehead!" ...and he'd be mostly right!

That looks awesome. I didnt realise that guard was available as an option. Is nickel silver heavier than brass?

They're nearly the same. Brass is 534 lbs/cu.ft. (8.56 times as heavy as water), and nickel-silver is 527 lbs/cu.ft. (8.45 times as heavy as water).

Hey awesome..... thanks.

I ordered mine in stainless steel. I believe this is a bit of a faux pas, as most prefer carbon steel.

I was just paranoid about rust... what sort of stainless do they use? I think someone mentioned Sandvik or was it Bohler?

The larger stainless knives are 440-B or 440-C steel, I believe, hardened to Rockwell 56 or 57.
(I have ordered stainless for most of my Randalls.)

vs. Aluminum at 165 lbs/cu.ft. (~2.65 x as heavy). NS and Brass are very close in weight(mass) - Aluminum alloy is much lighter...

Nice work C'n'R!
