so, i got those sportsmans guide axes... search on axe on their site...

here's a brief description of what i got, and my impression/etc...

here we see the 4 types i was sent. they said "styles may vary", they weren't kidding.

my obvious instant favorite is the left-most one. it's very thin, and possibly the lightest of the bunch. not sure on just-head weight, but my scale (roughly) 2.5 lbs, so i'll go with 2 lbs on the head. face is nearly 4 inches. call it 3.90...

the 2nd from the left is a 4 lbs head, note on the corners of the sides leading from the face have been angled somewhat. 3.50-3.75 inch face.

the 3rd from the left comes in at 3.5 lbs, and is a solid 4 inch face. almost boring this one.

4th from the left (right most :>) is 4 lbs head (handle comes off ;>) face is squared somewhat, and about 4.50 inches!

here's a close up of the profiles. variation as well, not the extremes!

identification markings time. here's a close up of the two with major markings. the axe head second from the left in the prior two photos has a "dimple" for a marking on the side not shown. it may reveal more character if cleaned, or it could simply have been a detent for something... one of the axes has a 194? on it. i'll have to scrub them clean, possible throw the handles away (one is clear spllit), and see what's up. i think i like what i got, considering my final price for them was $13.50 each after their member club discount :)

so, all in all, not too shabby. some of them are almost even sharp. none of them seem especially beat up or nasty.

the ad copy say that they are used, in very good shape and implies they are ready to go. i figured that they would need maintainance, as in new wedges and/or a boiled linseed oil soak. one of the handles is clean busted - i called about it, and they said i could sent all or part of the order back, but will not give me a credit for a new handle or send me a handle. well, that's not usueable condition. plus i've waited a whole gosh darned week for them to arrive by ground (20 lbs). a new handle (a LONG one will run more than the axe heads ;>). i dunno, maybe i've had one of those weeks, and i'm expecting too much. what do you think?

now, if i had a way to find out exactly what they had left... and was able to specify exactly which heads i'd like... i might order more. that very thin one is most sweet. it's probably very much like the wetterling (if it isn't, i don't know the mark); that you can buy now for around $40 with a proper handle. i guess it depends on your bargaining gene. they only have about 100. less if i order 4 more next week :)

update: i've managed to take the head off the two worst handles, and am removing the decades old grease/crud. the metal under them is actually VERY clean. the one that said 143x also has a pair of cross calvary swords? as a logo. mmm. needs more scrubbing, but i think they'll clean VERY well.

I found an axe (hatchet actually) head under the seat of an old truck I bought
and it is very much like your favorite exept the bottom is different Mine is marked with the same crest and says made in sweden and on the other side has 1.1/4 ,it is my favorite little hatchet. When I got it I put it on a new handle glue gunned it instead of a proper wedge and painted it with rust paint. I used it like that for years and it was amazing took a great edge and has a real nice profile.
Now it is years later and I have learned enough about knives and tools to realize what I have done to the poor thing I will try to fix my bubbaing and bring it back to a respectable condition.

I wouldn't buy anything from Sportsmans Guide on a bet. That example you just gave there is exactly why.

The one with a beef head mark might be an old ochsenkopf (ox-head) axe, which is a pretty good german maker/brand: steel should be pretty good. Handle should be replaced of course.

No idea about the others.
