on a rolex oyster perpetual (excuse me if I spell it wrong ) should you be able to see the individual ticks. I thought (and I am ignorant on the subject) that the dial sweeps and not even a slight ticking on the second hand would be present. the WIQ (watch in question) ticks about twice a second so it almost looks like there's no ticking movement but it is definately there.again I thought there was not supposed to be any ticking movement at all on a rolex just a constant sweep. correct me if i'm wrong and to all you rolex people pardon my gross ignorance again :D

As I sit looking at my Submariner, the second hand does about 6 tics/sec. The second hand on a Daytona(little hand) looks continuous but in reality is also composed of small ticks. The large timing hand on the Daytona(most people mistake the timing hand for the second hand and ask why the watch is not working) sweeps like the Sub second hand. But there were also quartz Rolex's made which should tick once per second. Be aware meachnical watches can be made to tick once per second, even though the second is divided into more intervals, its all in the gearing. Rolex fakes can be very difficult to tell and the sweep of the second hand is not a good test. An authorised Rolex dealer should be used to tell if the case and all external parts and the internal parts are all Rolex. There are always individuals looking to fake Rolex's and many people who have purchased Rolex's off the street do not know that they have a fake or partial fake. Twice a second would be two slow on a mechanical Rolex but you will have to use a 7X magnifyier to really tell. In any event, a typical quartz watch will tick once per second, a typical mechanical Rolex about 6 times a second. -Dick

If you can take a close look at the watch, off the wrist, there should be a serial number on the bracelet next to where it joins the body of the watch. Most fakes that I have seen do not bother with this detail.

The ticking should be 8 ticks per second (8 x 60 x 60 = 28800 beats per hour)

Check for markings on the backcase (fake, unless it's a seadweler)

Serial number and model number between the lugs

Lug holes for the bracelet pins (new ones come without this feature)

Font for the date is incorrect

It looks and feel cheap...

I hope this helps!

regards

You mean the Rolex that the guy in Mexico was trying to sell me for $35 might have been a fake?:D

I gave my little assistant in Phuket 20$ to get me a good deal on a rolex... he brought me back 5! All of them ran and kept excellent time. Stupidly, one of the guys I gave one to took it to a Rolex dealer to replace the battery. He says the dealer threw it in the trash and told him to leave.

that was worth 20$ to me....

Question! How many people who posted about telling a Rolex fake, own a Rolex or Rolex's and actually looked at a Rolex before posting? -Dick

I own a few: a Sub, a Seadweller, an Explorer, a GMT II, a Yachtmaster, and an 18kt blue-dial Sub. I'm thinking of picking up one of the new Daytonas soon.

I double checked on the ones in the house - no point in putting up wrong information.

Ed

The problem I have with Rolex fakes is that there are some really good fakes out there, that have good dials, and use mechanical movements. The only way to really tell is to look at the movement, and even then you may be dealing with a Frankenwatch of some sort.

Some of the newer-production Rolexes have a small Rolex logo etched into the sapphire crystal which you can see with a loupe. I wonder how long it will take for the forgers to copy this?

-The characteristic 'sweep' of the second hand
-The sound of the mechanical works
-The unusually heavy feel of the watch in your hand

I'm curious if it's common for fakes to have a saphire crystal.

I would be somewhat supprised if they did.

The saphire crystal is very hard. It seems you could have a scratch test or something. Of course the seller wouldn't probably agree!

The fakes don't have the word Swiss at the bottom of the face,
and the yellow gold is very shiny. Also the fakes are 1/3 the
weight.

I've seen fakes with decent-looking dials, including the fine print, and that were properly-weighted.

Be careful out there.
