mornin gents,

Im wondering if any of you have spot anealed a hardend blade to re do a grip or ??

I have a few knives that Id like to re grip but the blades of course are too hard to drill or even grind a hole through ( I already ruined 2 diamond burrs).

so Im wondering if I can aneal a small spot where I need to drill for pin holes...

we have a precision torch where I work.

As a matter of fact our machine shop forman says he spot aneals mauser barrels when he adds scopes etc for customers and uses the said torch ( hes a part time gun smith)

Your thoughts please thanks "John"

You can do that providing that it isn't air hardening type. You can always stick the blade in water and soften the tang without worrying about damage to the blade.

Yup, the water thing, that is what I do when i need to temper out a tang or ricosso. Water can only get to 212 deg F and that is far below any temp that would hurt the performance of the blade.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY,

im not following

am I heating the ricosso/tang then immersing in boiling water?

please explain. Thanks "John"

guys I had to think for a moment,

Ok is it I keep the the blade in boiling water while I heat the tang.

and once my spots on the tang/ ricosso are red do I let it air cool or should I cover in sand ...??

thanks again "John"

You can also stick the blade through a potato (HMMMMM seems the political way to spell it is potatoe!:D )

THANKS PETER,

I must be brain dead today. ok the blade goes in water that way when you heat the tang the blade cant get over 212 deg.

can you eat the potatoe after?

Many thanks "John"

Submerge the blade into cold water with the tang sticking out of the water. The cold water will suck away any heat that makes it to the blade (or the part you want to keep hardened). When you are working areas close to the water it will probably start to boil, but the water only gets to 212 deg F before it boils. The metal may get hotter than that.

Should work for ya.
