I have a couple of carbon steel blades that have developed a few small spots. Is there any way to rub these out without noticeably altering the satin finish? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try Nevrdull first, if the spots are still there, use Flitz/Simichrome. They work magic.

I let all my carbon blades form a natural patina and this in itself protects the blade from rust to a large degree. If a blade does rust it is very easy to remove the rust or corrosion.
Personally, I don't even like a shiny blade!
Too big a deal is made about rust, imho!

I recently did a little blade maintanence on some of my carbon steel slipjoints, and found that you have to leave the flitz on for a while before buffing out the spot. I was getting frustated rubbing it on and expecting the spot to vanish like magic.

one of those rust erasrer things will work great. i can't think of their real name, but its like a gritty rubber eraser intended for removing spots and stuff. i have one and love it. it might just be called "the eraser"???

I have not tried the eraser, but will when I can get one brought into Brazil. It sounds a product knuts need to have.

In the mean time, I use #600 or #800 SiC grit with oil and a cloth applying light pressure. I have not noticed any damage to the finishes on any of the knives rust has been removed from using this method. Several folks I have spoke with use a fine grade of steel wool and oil.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that bead blast finishes tend to rust more easily than others? I have found this especially true with S30V.

I haven't noticed it but there is a logical reason for them to rust faster than a polished surface.Bead blasting will increase the total surface area of the material due to the individual depressions left by the abrasive blasting compound as opposed to the flat surface left by polishing. More surface area = more opportunity for corrosion to occur. admittedly this is not a great amount but a rough surface tends to hold more contaminates which will accelerate corrosion.

I use this product called "sheath", on all my carbon blades.. I got it at a gun shop. It is supposed to keep moisture from forming on the blade. Or so they say. Seems to work well for me. I do not have any rust on my knives. But again, I am a.ways polishing them. Cheers.
