spot vs la griffe?

since the new lil'T is still more than 6 months away, I decide to get a small fixed blade for sd first.
I am looking at the emerson la griffe and the upcoming new spot.
I think Spot definately has a much more useful blade in either shape or grind than the la griffe. But my concern is the size and carry: I have not yet seen a real spot or comparison pics of the spot and the lagriffe, but the spot looks much longer than the lagriffe. I've seen some pics of belt carry the lagriffe and they look very discrete and comfortable. (I prefer belt carry over neck carry) Can anyone who have both show a comparison pic of the two knives? and has anyone managed to carry the spot on belt? thanks

:Overall Length: 4.9 in.

Blade Length: 1.75 in.

(Hey, has anyone heard from Don in a while? I used to talk to him fairly frequently before I went into the service, and haven't heard from him since~ like he dropped off the radar.)

Spyderco: length overall 4 13/16" (122 mm)

blade length 1 5/8" (41 mm)

Yeah, perhaps the profile is a little different, but the OAL shouldn't be way off, on the new SPOT. Someone want to comment on the current?

I owned a LaGriffe and gave it to my sister after I bought the first incarnation of the SPOT. The SPOT has way better ergonomics and a more conventional grind. Size difference was negligable. The new SPOT will have a wharncliff style blade that is slightly longer than the original version. I haven't received my test prototype yet, so I can't really comment on it. According to Sal, RLR and myself should be receiving our test pieces any time now. KEEP IN MIND that these are prototypes, so I doubt you'll see any pics posted (unless by Sal himself), and since they are just being tested, it isn't even certain whether or not these will go into production. My advice is to order one of the original SPOT knives (you can still find them) in VG10.

thanks Davey. I think I will wait for the new SPOT since I am not a fan of recurve S blade. Hopefully there will be a new spot passaround and I can try one in my hands.

IREED, many people tend to shy away from the 's' curved blade because of the difficulty in sharpening it, but it truly is the best shape for slicing (in my opinion). With a blade this short, a Sharpmaker or DMT serrated sharpening rod make sharpening an 's' curved blade a breeze. Trust me, the original SPOT will make you much happier than the LaGriffe. If the new SPOT goes prodo, then everyone will be happy.

I'm a Spyderco fan and not an Emerson fan, but I gotta say the LaGriffe is better for SD. You can hang onto that sucker REALLY tight and really rip and tear with it. The sheath isn't as good as the SPOT though.

I had a LaGriffe on my Keychain for about a year before it slipped out of it's Kydex and I lost it. :grumpy:

I had the spot for a week in a passaround and didn't like it much at all. The ergos weren't good for me and the sheath was to big. I love my lagriffe, fast to deploy, totally simple dependable sheath that works great for neck carry or static cord belt carry. The blade has given me no problems sharpening it on a sharpmaker and mine is wicked sharp. Great design overall but just goes to show one guys dream is another guys lemon.

ahhh, finally I found some great pics of spot and la griffe side by side on "thinkofthechildren"'s site.

The spot looks no bigger than the la griffe, and I think I am definately get a spot. But since I sharpen knives with free hands, I think I will wait for the new warncliff spot, though a leaf or bowie spot would be even better.

I just replaced it! Yea!

Now, I just need to get rid of this SPOT I don't like. ;)

Get the LaGriffe.

He used to be at SDF until the owner of that site wanted him (and Ken Cook and others) to compromise his integrity. Of course they left that place and are currently in the course of setting up a new forum on their own.

Fancinating. Do you have any links, as to what went down? Or was this a closed door type deal?

I used to hang over at SDF as well, but I noticed a general lack of quality posting and haven't been back for quite awhile..

I greatly look foward to the new forum.

Looking at the origins of this thread, I can't give an opinion on the La Griffe, but I can on the Spot. I have 2, one in VG-10 and a black one in AUS-6. Because of the thinner handle on the black one, i have been carrying it as part of my EDC for 2 months now and I love it :D Still can't completely make up my mind on a folder; i tend to rotate between a few, but the Spot has found a "spot" in my heart ;)

I was one of the Mods on the "old" SDF with Don and Ken,et al.
I just got off the phone with Don,and he is doing well,as are all of us.
And yes,we are working on the new forum.
Thanks,TJT
