I am getting spots in my blades when heatreated. Using 1095 steel and quench in canola oil. Any ideas?

Let's move your question to the right place...(not tech support)...

We need more info:
1) How was it HTed?
2) How much did you grind it post HT?
3) How much was it sanded in the final finishing?
4) Was it forged or stock removal?

My suspicion is there is still decarb on the surface.

My guess is that he is heat treating in a forge and over heating the blade.

Hard to say until he responds. He is a retired engineer who taught HT in the machinery industry, so I suspect he may have a HT oven.
