Spots on knife after cleaning?

So I got a new knife today, and when I cleaned it, these strange spots appeared.
The knife has a gray titanium nitride finish, I will post pictures later.
I used simple rubbing alcohol 70/30 water solution to clean the blade (I was prepping it to oil or wax it)
Any idea what the hell happened here?
I've never seen this, I've cleaned titanium nitride finished knives before.
Will post pictures soon.

Maybe it was a reaction with the oil?
Not sure what kind of oil CRKT uses on their knives from the factory.

The spots are permanent and look like rubbed off finish.
Some streaking, the spots and appeared as I wiped the alcohol away.

Ok so got some pictures, I really don't know what to do in terms of degreasing and perfect cleaning/sanitizing anymore, I am so use to using alcohol I have a lot of it because I purchased bulk just for this.

Sorry my camera sucks, I am working on buying a new one soon.

Contact seller and got a replacement. But I am still confused as to why this happened with such a reliable cleaner, and am terrified of using it again.

I also am interested in sanitizing, cleaning, and degreasing suggestions that do not involve water or soap

I just got it new, and cleaned it and finish came off like that, it looked fine until I wiped it. Was not sure what caused it exactly, but no brand new knife should look like that out of the box after being wiped with isopropyl and a towel.

One spot looks kind of like a scratch but that was the spot that I saw appear as I wiped. The spots just kind of popped up I did not see them appear.

What could have caused that?

Edit:

I know contamination with anything was impossible with the towels and alcohol. I have no idea if something ended up on the knife surface before I got it or what.

Are you sure that it was rubbing alcohol? It shouldn't do something like this to a Titanium Nitride coating. Hydrogen Peroxide however is a different story. This stuff can apparently remove the coating with a good soak? Another possibility is that CRKT's Titanium Nitride isn't really Titanium Nitride, but some sort of painted on finish.

My point is that it was already like that. Perhaps oil on the surface camouflaged the spots- but alcohol won't remove a nitride coating.

Those spots look like wear from rubbing or abrasion, especially considering where they're showing up on the blade, most being on the high/thick areas that would rub hard in cutting thick, abrasive material (cardboard, etc). Perhaps they were hidden originally by oil, as Bill suggested, or some other 'soft' coating like wax, etc. The alcohol likely took that soft coating off. Alcohol wouldn't otherwise damage a hard coat like TiNi.

Was it a towel you used or like sandpaper ???

Someone could of scuffed it bad then covered it with some kinda ink the. The alchohal took it off don't know might just be defective

If the rag used to wipe the blade was light colored enough, did you see any of the finish that rubbed off on it?

No I didn't see any finish rub of. I figured it might have been covered by CRKTs oil as sugguested, or maybe the blade was contaminated when coated or something and it just did not stick quite right (if that can happen with titanium nitride) - I doubt CRKT would be lying I mean they certainly can afford to coat it, and they have a good history I think.

The spots appeared in a strange way, by that I mean it looked as though they appeared as the alcohol evaporated, and wiping it sort of accelerated that. I figured this would be the bets place to say this, if anything it documents something, so if it happens to another persons knife in the future it might be figured out.

I used a white microfiber towel to clean it. Yeah it was certainly rubbing alcohol, for sure I have two spray bottles that I modified with plasti dip (I did this to help me learn how to apply it to something I could mess up like a cheap spray bottle, not because I needed them to have grip, although it is more comfortable now)
One bottle has 70 alcohol 30 water, the other is 99.999 alcohol, 00.001 or whatever water. I used the 70/30 on it like I usually do - as the pure alcohol is a bit harsh and dries fast enough to leave harmless kind of water spots.

The knife was replaced, I'd still like to know some alcohol alternatives and I don't really feel like pushing the boundaries of the return policy by hitting the replacement knife with more alcohol. Just to be on the side of caution.
However if anybody else bought a Fulcrum 2 and cleaned it with alcohol, they could chime in on it.
