Spotted micarta

I've used some old cross cut micarta on this one.
The scales come from a large block. One side is spotted as on this knife, the other side of the large block has hardly any spots.

What are these spots, where do they come from?
Do they affect the strenght of the material?

I like the looks of them, I call it panther micarta!

in my shop, the outer layer seems to discolor maybe from air or light. especially the natural micartas. they get darker or mottled.
