I sure this was mentioned before, but couldn't find it in a search.

Does anyone have experience using that sprayon truckbed liner stuff for coating handles?

Brand, process, any information I can get please.

I'm gonna build a knife for a pig hunter friend. (He uses a knife, just a knife, for the hunt. Hand to hand combat with a wild pig in the field. Real nice guy too - good thing.)

Right now he's using an 8" traditional K-bar.

Point is I'm thinking a full tang type handle, with aluminum scales, shaped mostly round and then coating with truck bed liner.

This seems to me an application where a non-slip surface for sweaty palms is a must.

Bigjohn, who posts on these forums, uses Line-X for some of his knives:

I haven't tried the truck bed liner but I have wrapped them in nylon thread and used the spray material that they use to make picture frames look like stone. I did a katana like that once fully expecting it to flake. It has held up like new for four years now and it gets a lot of use and handleing. I expect the TB liner would hold up even better!

Yes it's been mentioned here before, but it was 2-3 years ago.
Herculiner is one that would work, Dupli-Color is another.

Herculiner is available from Wal Mart, and auto supply stores.
Dupli Color is harder to find, but has has some of it's product in a spray can as part of the DIY kit.

It's all pretty tough. :)

my dad got a new truck, and instead of getting a plastic liner, theres a LINEX location who sprayed one in, damn, this stuff is TOUGH!!!! and believe me, these people have the equipment to do it! we were thinking about getting cans of it and doing it ourselves, but these people lay it on thick, and they know what theyre doing! this is tough stuff!

I tried a couple of the cheap spray on kind and they didn't work at all. Took some to the Line X dealer in my area who happily sprayed the handles at no charge and offered to do as many more as I wanted. The Line X worked GREAT!

Yeah, give Big John a yell bigjohnknives@yahoo.com . He'd be glad to help out Steve. I finally met him down in VA after talking on the computer for quite awhile. Real nice fella and those Line-X knives of his were really cool.

The Herculiner will definitely work. My neighbor had some for the back of his Jeep, and I stirred the stuff for him(one gallon can).
I got sidetracked, and didn't remove it from the screwdriver blade right away.
Had to literally carve it off, and it was on thick.

You would only need to dip the handles in it. Herculiner is made to be rolled, or brushed on.

Thanks Guys!

I looked up the Herculiner. Good news, they sell it in 1 qt too: $30. The trouble is:

HERCULINER is a moisture-cured product. An open or partially used can will thicken and eventually become unusable.

Looks like you can't just have a can and use it now and again like paint. Seems like moisture triggers the chemical reaction to start hardening. One time use kinda deal. Hmmm.... I like the idea of stopping by the truck liner place. If there was one handy.

I'll contact Big John too.

That's why I never got around to trying Herculiner. I couldn't see buying a quart for $30 just to experiment on one knife. Turned out not to be a problem since the Line X man is so friendly. I have heard good stuff about Herculiner.
