Spray paint as rust prevention

With winter on the way I'm trying to put together an "emergency car failure" bag filled with various items that may prove useful if I have to camp out by the roadside in a blizzard or something. Besides the usual blankets, boots, warm clothes, and tools, I have a nice utilitarian 7" Ontario Knife cabbage knife that I would like to toss in there too. I am concerned that it has a tendancy to rust very fast if not well cared for. It will not be well cared for in the trunk of my car. I am considering giving it a coat of automotive grade primer or exterior lacquer. Will this help to prevent rust for a few months, or are there other products that I should use?

Paint will work, but that's kinda ugly and will gum up the edge. Go out and get either a can of Boshield, or a can of LPS-3, and spray that on the blade. You can also dip the blade in melted wax, or get some cosmoline
