Just thought I’d share kind of a cute little story with you all…

I'm a civilian worker for the local police, and it always surprises me how little most officers know about knives. I'd expected at least some of them to have an Emerson or two, or maybe a SOG, but some don't even bother to carry a duty knife at all! The ones who do tend to favour ‘el cheapos’ or multi-tools: a few S&Ws, a handful of Gerbers, the odd SAK, and lots of Leathermans. One fella supposedly has a Kershaw, but I've never seen it and he doesn’t know the name of the model. There is one older chap who carries a stainless steel Spyderco Endura with full SpyderEdge in GIN1—I was very pleased to see that at least *someone* had a Spydie, and a handsome classic at that…

Anyway, there is an officer and friend at the station who was recently transferred to a different shift: a good guy and a great cop (not a ‘bully with a badge’—those I can’t abide as they bring only shame and dishonour to all… but I digress.) He didn’t have a duty knife, so I dropped off a new CRKT M16 into his mailbox with a short ‘good luck/best wishes’ kind of note tucked inside the box.

I was at my desk at the station when I got a message from his cruiser terminal, thanking me for such a thoughtful gift. He went on and on about his new CRKT, how cool it was, and how slick the deployment was. You'd have thought I gave him a Chris Reeve custom! I responded that it was my pleasure and that I was glad he appreciated it. After an hour or two, I got another message from him:

“It’s not illegal, is it?”

After I controlled my laughter, I answered that I must have missed that day at cop-school and suggested that he should ‘ask a police officer,’ then went on to explain how perfectly legal it is and educated him a bit about the lock-up, construction materials, and how the deployment works.

I think it would be a fine day should he ever come to me and show off something he bought on his own. Perhaps he will, and perhaps we’ll welcome another ‘knife nut’ into the fold…

What’s *your* story? :)

My friend is in the Navy, and has been gone for about 3 years now and we had somewhat lost touch. We made contact every few months, but nothing more than a simple conversation. Well this December I really got back into buying knives, and not the el cheapos that I used to buy when I was younger. I sent him a message asking him if he had a decent knife he could use while in the service, and he messaged me back a few days later that he did not have anything like that. So I had Kershawguy send him a Kershaw RAM. I'll admit, I was probably 10 times more excited about it than he was, that is until he received it.

The day it arrived, he called me and told me how awesome it was and how sharp it was, but he didn't have much time to mess with it. So I told him just to enjoy it when he could and let me know how he liked it later. Well a few more days go by and he sends me 3 or 4 messages about how he's really enjoying using it, but he also told me he was being deployed. He said he is going to take it with him during his deployment to as many places as he is legally allowed to and will have it with him whenever possible. I thought it was really cool, and gives me some peace at mind knowing that hes got a good quality knife in his pocket, and it's something I gave to him.

I was at a cop party one time. My good friend married into a cop family, Dad's a retired local, 3 brothers are air marshall, county, and state. Anyhow, they have these cop parties and sometimes i'm in attendance. Most of the guys I've met have a mix of auto and manual quality knives. But one guy had an Emerson and he was cool enough to let me handle it. I had never held one and remarked how light it was and that was attributable to the titanium, to which he replied "this is a steel blade, buddy." haha
