I apologize if this has been asked previously and beaten to death. I am a new member and perhaps later on I will be able to upgrade and do a search.
What I would like to ask is a little info on spring assisted opening folders.
I would really like to buy one. Currently there are a few different one's at our local store I have been considering. The kershaw is prominent with their blackout and sog is in there with aegis, trident, etc.
How have these knives worked out for you? Have you been happy with them and their reliability or have they been problematic? Looking for a first purchase. Thank you in advance.

Sean

I own a Kershaw Leek, a SOG Trident, and a SOG Flash II, among others. All are great knives. The Leek's assist is faster and more "firm," but it's also a smaller knife than the two SOGs I've mentioned.

My main experience with AO knives has been several different Kershaw Leeks I have used for EDC. In several years of use, I have never had a problem with them. Never had an accidental opening and I do not recall ever having an incomplete opening after the new knife had been cycled a few times.

Overall, I think the Leek is an excellent design and a very nice value.

I have the Kershaw Scallion and it opens quite nicely. It also has a blade open lock so the blade won't open accidentally in your pockets  . I also have the SOG Twitch II and Flash II with the SOG Assisted Technology (SAT). IMO, the Twitch II's AO is nicer than the Scallion's implementation of Speedsafe. The AO is smoother. It also has a blade lock. If you're looking for a larger blade, check out the Twitch XL's. They have the same excellent fit and finish of the smaller Twitch as well as the jewel-like operation.

Can't go wrong with the Kershaw Lineup. Pretty much anything Kershaw makes that is assisted is going to be great. A few you should check out are the leek and shallot models. They are classic Ken Onion solid AO models. If you do decide to get a Shallot, email me and I'll cut you a deal on an extra one I have.

I have experience with all these plus the SOG Flash II and Twitch II. None of them have ever failed me and I was happy with all of them. Lot's of great choices but I'm partial to Kershaw.

The Kershaw Leek is a very good knife to get you started in the world of AO's.
They're nice and slim so they feel great in your pocket and there are so many
variations to choose from. A flavor for anyone interested in one.

Gentlemen, thank you ever so much for your input and thoughts. I will head out tommorow and buy a couple of assisted openers. I am looking forward to a first purchase.

Lotsa Kershaws mentioned but not Benchmades. The 913D2 Nitrous is a mighty nice knife. 3.7" drop point D2 blade and titanium liners in a slim package. Here's a photo of mine:

There's my $.02. :)

Kershaw Leek is a great choice. As is the Kershaw Scallion. Actually, I believe any of the Kershaws would suit you well.

SA's are illegal here but I've handled a few in the past. The Kershaws seem to work very well and are very, very fast. There have been a few issues reported with the CRKT Hissatsu but the BNIB one I got to play with seemed to work fine. The SOG Trident's assist is designed to ensure it stays closed until you open it, after which it will kick-in for a positive lockup. IMO if SA's are legal where you live then they have some positive benefits that make them a worthwhile purchase. Some models allow you to deactivate the assist by removing the spring so you get the best of both worlds

For everyday use, there isn't a big enough difference between fully manual and SA to stop you from buying a non-assist knife if you find one you like

I too am also new to the forum. Over the last 2 weeks I have purchased 4 Kershaws, a Leek, a Blur, a OD-1 and a Zing.

I am lucky I have a good retirement & a very sweet Wife that lets me indulge in my "stuff" as she calls it. Guns, Knives, Smoking Pipes.

A Kershaw Leek has replaced a Schatt & Morgran Trapper as my EDC. I love this knife. Handy and easy to keep shaving sharp. I heated this knife with the Wife's hairdryer and put a few drops of CLP on the pivot and it opens fast.

All of my Kershaws are solid & well built.

what, no cyclone love? try a large or mini cyclone by kershaw. gotta hurry, they are not going to be around much longer (discontinued 2009 line up). if a good size, meaty edc is your goal, large cyclone is the ticket!
