That was a creepy one Brian. Nicely done!

Thank you Andy! I'm glad you liked it. I have spent the past five years working on a flora fauna data base, so I have spent a lot of time in the field and have been fortunate enough to capture some pretty cool images. I thought the creepiness might help drive home the point for the need for awareness :)

Thanks for the great blog Brian! Awareness is king when it comes to safety imo.

Thank you Todd! I think so too. Sometimes I am hesitant to post some things because they are second nature to me, but then I think of all the young people looking for knowledge on the outdoors, and I try to add some good information for them.

Great blog post. I have encountered hornets and one cottonmouth so far (and lots of harmless snakes) this spring. My major spring surprise, thus far, has been walking up on a couple of black bears. I think they were almost grown juveniles. I haven't had that happen in a couple decades.

"The bears may scare you; but the bugs will GET you!" Funny how many people will lug pounds of bear spray and not have any kind of medical/first aid kit.

Nice write up.

Thank you. We don't have cotton mouths this far north anymore as far as I've seen and they don't like the mountain streams anyway. They keep trying to reintroduce bears in this area but the disappear as soon as they are released it seems.

Good info, thanks Brian! Identification of flora and fauna is definitely a skill I need to work on.

Thanks Davd, it has been an area of study for me for years now, but what I know still pales in comparison to what I want to know.

Thanks Swo, and I agree. I have roamed a lot of woods and a lot of swamps and so far have yet to be really bothered by any animals. Though the hogs in southern Florida did make me nervous enough that I carried my pistol out in the field most of the time. But I have had bee and hornet stings, and spider bites from not paying attention. There is no telling how many mosquitoes have been brought into being thanks to my blood...they sure have drank a lot of it over the years, quite a few ticks over the years as well. One reason I prefer the woods in the autumn and winter more so than spring or summer.

I would much rather run into a "friendly" bear or two than an old wild hog. They get pretty bad in Texas and up in Akansas where I have family. I ran into the bears on a morning stroll up in Washington state visiting buddy, not even hiking, just walking up the road. Was about a mile from the house with just a thermos of coffee, my Kabar dogs head slip joint and my camera (thought I might get some good shots of birds we don't have in TX).

Very nice write-up & fantastic pics Brian.

You are right about the venomous snakes & spiders here in Australia. I always check my boots/shoes to make sure there's no spider in there before putting them on.

I was working in the yard one hot day a few years back and took off my shirt and put it on a bush. Few hours later went to put it back on and there were a few wasps in there. Got stung about 20 times

i was standing outside the shop today w/ Allen, Oscar & Thor today while on the phone w/ a forumite/customer/friend when all hell broke loose........
a black widow came running out of nowhere towards me and Oscar , Allen & I tried to get Oscar away from it and in the chaos Oscar stepped on the black widow.......Problem solved
